Understanding Tank Hydrotesting​

Hydrostatic testing is a method of verifying the strength and integrity of storage tanks by filling them with liquid, typically water. It’s essential when tanks are newly built or have undergone major modifications, ensuring they are safe to commission.

There are several key reasons to carry out hydrotesting:

• Leak detection: Tanks are filled and held for 24 hours to identify pinholes, cracks or welding defects.
• Mechanical strength: The test exposes structural weaknesses that could otherwise lead to environmental or safety hazards once the tank 
is in use.
• Verification of working components: Features like floating roofs, seals and drains are tested in real operating conditions.
• Foundation integrity: Controlled settlement is monitored during the test to confirm the foundation can support the full design load (typically 110% of 
the tank’s capacity).
• Practical and cost-effective: Hydrotesting offers 
a reliable alternative to more complex or expensive testing methods, without the need for radiographic weld inspection.
