Upgradation of existing sewer network, Yas Island, Abu Dhabi

Project Overview

WJ Middle East_Sewer Bypass_Yas Island_Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, has become home to people from all over the world who are drawn to its natural beauty, vibrant cultural scene, inspiring heritage and dynamic business landscape. ALDAR is one of the most trusted and recognized real estate lifestyle developers in the UAE and in charge of the development of Yas Island and adjoining areas. The turnkey contract for over pumping and bypass, during their construction has been carried out by WJ Middle East.

Scope of Work

The scope of work is to carry out over pumping works for the upgradation and improvement to the sewer network at Yas Development Area which included the installation and operation of the system.
This task required WJ to employ high-capacity, diesel engine-driven centrifugal pumps for sewer bypass.
At each of the locations, by using 100 meters of HDPE discharge lines, WJ was able to effectively divert the flows to the downstream network, ensuring the work could be completed efficiently and safely. WJ had also employed high-capacity pneumatic plugs for blocking the manhole.

Engineered Solution

An engineered solution in terms of design, installation, operation and 24 hour maintenance was provided. WJ designed an over pumping system consisting of 2 pumps – duty & standby per each network to give a dry platform at the required tie-in points. The system has been equipped with diesel engine driven, surface pumps, with standby units, level monitoring system and panels were provided with suitable alarm systems. WJ’s operations team has provided 24hr on site monitoring and maintenance to the whole system.

Particular attention to Main Contractor’s work programmed has been made whilst designing the bypass system. This has allowed us to optimize the sizing of the pipe, valves, pumps and all system accessories, minimizing the operating cost for our client – National Projects and Construction.

At the same time our solution offered the Client the necessary redundancy, which allowed some degree of flexibility in the Contractor’s program, made provision for unexpected flow conditions and unfavorable weather patterns. This redundancy is embedded within all key components of the over pumping infrastructure. During the system operation, site reports have been generated to monitor the efficiency and performance of the system. Attention to actual flowrates has been given to ensure that any increase in the discharge rate could be detected and examined, to find the root cause of the problems.

The project has been awarded on November 2019 where the aforementioned works are on-going; estimated project completion is early 2025.
