Sump pumping for
managing groundwater

Sump pumping offers a reliable and straightforward solution for controlling groundwater inflows, particularly in rock and stable soil conditions. It is commonly used for overpumping applications, such as lagoons, lakes, pipelines, and sewage treatment works. WJ often combines sump pumping with deepwell systems to control fissure and fracture flows in bedrock.

How sump pumping works

The success of sump pumping depends on careful construction of sump pits and trenches to intercept and direct groundwater to the pump. In low-permeability soils or where overbleed occurs, French drains can be installed to improve water collection.

Collecting and redirecting water

These consist of a horizontal slotted pipe within a backfilled trench, typically 0.5m wide and at least 1m deep, sloping towards a sump pit. Water is collected and pumped away from the site to maintain dry and stable conditions.

Electric sump pumps are especially effective in confined spaces like manholes or on floating pontoons. As they are quieter and more compact than diesel alternatives, they’re also suitable for noise-sensitive environments.
