The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is the government-owned utility responsible for delivering electricity and water services across the Emirate of Dubai. Established in 1992 through the merger of the Dubai Electricity Company and the Dubai Water Department, DEWA now serves over 800,000 water customers, with a strong emphasis on reliability, sustainability, and innovation.
DEWA’s total water production capacity stands at 495 million gallons per day (MIGD), with average daily consumption around 400 MIGD. The majority of this supply is generated through seawater desalination, supported by a strategic network of groundwater abstraction wells for emergency use.
As part of its initiative to increase installed groundwater capacity from 32 MIGD to 36 MIGD by 2023, DEWA commissioned WJ Middle East to install 65 new water abstraction wells within an existing well field located southeast of Dubai city.
WJ, the leading installer of dewatering wells in the Emirate, brought extensive expertise to the project. Each well was drilled and constructed to meet DEWA’s stringent quality standards, with rigorous cleaning and testing protocols ensuring optimal water quality and performance.
Despite the logistical challenges of operating in a remote desert environment, WJ successfully completed the project on schedule, with 100% of wells passing DEWA’s demanding water quality testing regime.
